Our goal — make the world’s greatest floss.

We spent hundreds of hours researching and testing a wide range of tools designed to remove bacteria between teeth and gums. Of course, this included dozens of floss brands and styles — from “natural brands” to popular commercial brands.

None did the job as we envisioned. We thought…

  • Why not optimize floss so that in addition to removing plaque, it was infused with ingredients beneficial to oral health? Doing so was a real technical challenge as we worked with our dental advisors and engineers at our manufacturing partner.
  • Why not drastically cut waste & make it refillable? Our Refillable Floss System™ does that, reducing waste by more than 70% over traditional flosses. When empty, simply pop open the case and insert a new bobbin.
  • Why not utilize advanced thread technology? Our floss uses an advanced multifilament thread technology made up of 500+ filaments — each strand thinner than a human hair. This multifilament thread expands to grab more crud from between teeth and gums. It has also been shown to physically trap and remove bacteria.
  • Why not make it a color that is helpful? We chose black as a color for our Black Infused Floss (using the multifilament thread technology) to help a person see what is being removed. We found seeing all the gunk was inspirational to keeping up the habit of flossing.
  • Why not offer a truly eco-friendly version? Our Silk Infused Floss is 100% biodegradable and compostable. It retains its natural color — off white. We chose to not make it black since the only options were:
    1. Infuse with charcoal (too abrasive)
    2. Use a black dye (the only black dyes that are both effective and practical are synthetic)

The more we researched, the more we realized how crucial flossing is to oral health.


Did you know?

  • Poor oral health can be linked to several ailments and imbalances throughout the body.
  • An estimated 300-500 species of bacteria live inside our mouths and can be found in plaque. While some are beneficial, most are not. Look under the microscope.
  • According to a Delta Dental national public opinion poll of American adults, 20% of adults never floss, and 32% of adults reported no flossing in the past week.

How to refill the floss container:

  1. Unscrew Cap
  2. Pull ~3” of floss from the spool
  3. Drop Spool into container
  4. Feed floss through hole in the cap
  5. Screw the cap back on & floss

Important note: use the floss end from the CENTER of the spool, not the end on the OUTSIDE.

To floss:

Establish a solid flossing routine. Here’s what works for us.

  • Try to floss at the same time, every day.
  • Miss a day (or several)? Just floss at your next designated time (don’t beat yourself up).
  • Make it visual — keep your floss on your bathroom sink, in your purse, or car console.
  • Don’t run out — just like a core supplement, this good habit can die if you run out. Consider subscribing or purchasing refills in bulk.
  • Keep in mind while flossing — this simple task supports whole body health and helps remove bacteria that contribute to bad breath, etc.

Haven’t flossed in a while? Use the appearance and the smell of what you remove as inspiration to keep it up. Yep, it’s kinda gross, however, it does provide great inspiration to make flossing daily part of your oral hygiene routine.

If your teeth have very tight spacing, our Infused Silk Floss is your best option. It’s thinner and designed to glide smoothly between even the closest contacts.

Our Black Infused Floss is great for most people—it expands while flossing to grab more plaque—but if you have very tight teeth, it may feel too thick.

If you have both tight and less tight spacing, you could choose to use both versions. Simply use two dispensers — use the Infused Silk Floss spool in one, and the Infused Black Floss spool in the other.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque. By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chances of keeping your teeth for a lifetime.

  1. Unscrew the cap
  2. Pull ~3” of floss from the spool
  3. Drop the spool into container
  4. Feed floss through the hole in the cap
  5. Screw the cap back on & floss

Important note: use the floss end from the CENTER of the spool, not the end on the OUTSIDE.

Our goal is to always make things “as simple as possible but no simpler”. While we initially resisted adding another kind of floss, two reasons compelled us.

Reason #1:  We listened and responded — we got enough feedback from people with really tight spacing between their teeth that our Infused Black Floss was too thick for them. Akamai Infused Silk Floss is thinner while still being very strong.

Reason #2: Adding Silk Floss enables us to offer a 100% plastic-free option. Combined with our Stainless Steel Container — it is about as sustainable and environmentally friendly as you can get when it comes to floss.

Both are infused with certified organic essential oils, ethical beeswax & Fulvic Acid to support oral health.

Stainless steel is very strong. If your container gets banged up (e.g. from getting stuffed in a travel bag) there's a possibility that the top flap could get bent down (it is small after all).

If it’s no longer elevated enough for a clean cut, you can easily fix it. Either unscrew the top and gently push it back out using tweezers or a small metal tool, or carefully pry it upward from the top — just a tiny bit.

Flossing questions answered by the American Dental Association

  • When’s the best time to floss?
    The ADA recommends brushing twice a day and cleaning between teeth with floss (or another interdental cleaner) once a day. Some people prefer to floss in the evening before bedtime so that the mouth is clean while sleeping. Others prefer to floss after their midday meal. Still, others choose to floss first thing as a part of their morning ritual. The bottom line is that the best time to floss is the time that fits well with the individual’s schedule.
  • Should I brush or floss first?
    According to the ADA, either is acceptable as long as you do a thorough job. Some people like to floss before brushing to better ensure that any material between teeth is swept out of the mouth. Others prefer to first clean their mouth by brushing before working with floss between their teeth. However, those who brush their teeth and skip flossing because they think their mouth feels clean or are short on time or tired and postpone flossing for some later time are likely missing out because flossing may never happen.
  • Can I rinse and reuse floss?
    The ADA does not recommend using a floss strand more than once. Used floss might fray, lose its effectiveness, or may deposit bacteria in the mouth. Discard after use.

Great floss!

Best floss I’ve ever tried!

I’m so picky about my floss. I have a couple gaps where food gets caught, but I also have some tight contacts, and I think I’ve tried every other floss on the market. This is by far the best floss I’ve ever used. It’s soft, smooth, glides so easily, and doesn’t get caught on the one rough part of a crown. You can see the plaque comes off, and you can tell when you’ve got it all out. Worth every penny!

The floss is great to use. I love the flavor and it’s thick! I actually look forward to flossing with it, it’s so durable!

however, even though the container is really cool I can’t seem to pull it through without undoing the lid all the way just because the canister is too full.

Bring Back Plastic Reusable

Love the floss and prompt delivery when I run out. Missing old plastic refillable. Old plastic packaging easier to use and replace floss. New stainless and glass containers are more difficult to change and refill and tear floss. Also cannot see when it is running low like glass or plastic.

I find myself more willing to floss with the infused silk floss. it's easy to tear off a piece from the cute container, but mostly it's because of the smell and taste of the essential oils. So I floss more often, which has got to be a good thing.
